Apply to the correct destination

Your main destination determines which country should assess the application.

Short-Stay Schengen Visa

Can Pakistani passport holders apply for a Schengen Visit Visa?

Yes. Pakistani passport holders who want to make a short visit to the Schengen Area normally need a short-stay Schengen visa before travelling.

A short-stay visa can cover purposes such as tourism, visiting family or friends, and other permitted temporary visits. The maximum Schengen short-stay framework is 90 days in any 180-day period, but your individual visa may authorise fewer days.

The quality of the application depends on more than a bank balance. The consulate considers your travel purpose, itinerary, finances, accommodation, personal circumstances and whether the evidence supports your intention to leave before the authorised stay ends.

Main Destination Rule

Which Schengen embassy should you apply to?

You should not select an embassy simply because an appointment seems easier to obtain. Your genuine itinerary determines which Schengen country is responsible for assessing the application.

One Schengen country

If you are visiting only one Schengen country, that country is normally responsible for your visa application.

Several Schengen countries

Apply to the country that is your main destination, normally where the principal purpose of the trip takes place or where you will spend the longest period.

Equal-length stays

If you will spend an equal amount of time in several Schengen countries and there is no different main purpose, the country whose external border you cross first is generally responsible.

Length of Stay

Understanding the 90 days in 180 days rule

The Schengen short-stay framework normally allows no more than 90 days within any rolling 180-day period.

This does not mean every applicant receives a 90-day visa. Your visa sticker can authorise a shorter duration, specific validity dates and a limited number of entries.

Entry and exit days count as days of stay. If you have previous Schengen travel, those days may also affect how much short-stay time remains available.

Visa Validity

The dates during which the visa can be used, subject to its entry conditions.

Duration of Stay

The maximum number of days you are authorised to stay under that visa.

Number of Entries

Your visa may permit one entry, two entries or multiple entries.

Border Entry

A visa does not remove the requirement to satisfy entry conditions at the external border.

Application Requirements

Schengen Visit Visa requirements from Pakistan

The destination country can have a local supporting-document checklist, but these are the main areas that normally need to be addressed in a short-stay application.

Valid Passport

Your passport should meet Schengen validity rules, have sufficient blank pages and have been issued within the permitted period.

Clear Travel Purpose

Your itinerary should explain where you are travelling, why you are visiting and how long you intend to stay.

Sufficient Financial Means

You should be able to show that you can reasonably cover your trip, accommodation and return travel under the destination country’s rules.

Accommodation Evidence

Provide accommodation evidence that matches the dates and destinations shown in your travel plan.

Travel Medical Insurance

Your policy must meet the Schengen requirements for territory, duration and minimum medical coverage.

Reason to Return

Your circumstances should support your intention to leave the Schengen Area before your permitted stay ends.

Passport Check

Check your passport before preparing the application

A Schengen visa application requires a travel document that meets the Visa Code rules. A passport that does not meet them can make the application inadmissible or unsuitable for the intended trip.

Valid After Departure

It should normally remain valid for at least 3 months after your intended departure from the Schengen Area.

Blank Pages

The passport should contain at least 2 blank pages under the Visa Code requirement.

Issue Date

It should have been issued within the previous 10 years.

Supporting Documents

Documents for a Schengen Visit Visa from Pakistan

Use the responsible country’s official checklist as the final document list. The evidence below represents the common areas a Pakistani visitor should be prepared to address.

Visa Application Form

A completed and signed Schengen visa application form in the format required by the responsible consulate.

Passport

A valid passport meeting Schengen travel-document requirements, plus copies where requested.

Visa Photograph

A recent photograph that meets the applicable biometric and ICAO standards.

Travel Itinerary

A realistic trip plan showing travel dates, destinations and movement between countries where relevant.

Accommodation

Hotel reservations, host accommodation or other acceptable evidence for the intended stay.

Travel Insurance

A qualifying medical policy covering the Schengen territory and the intended period of stay.

Financial Evidence

Bank statements and other evidence showing sufficient funds for the proposed trip and return.

Employment or Business Evidence

Employment, leave, salary, business ownership or professional evidence relevant to your circumstances.

Invitation Evidence

If visiting family or friends, provide invitation and host evidence requested by the destination country.

Family or Civil Documents

Relationship, marital or family documents may be relevant depending on your purpose and circumstances.

Student Evidence

Students may need enrolment, leave or sponsorship evidence appropriate to their application.

Case-Specific Evidence

The consulate may request additional documents based on your destination, purpose, sponsor or personal circumstances.

Financial Evidence

How much bank balance is required for a Schengen visa from Pakistan?

There is no single universal Schengen bank balance that applies to every Pakistani visitor.

Schengen countries can apply their own reference amounts or methods for assessing sufficient means. The amount that makes sense for your application also depends on your trip length, accommodation, prepaid costs, sponsorship and travel plan.

A large last-minute deposit does not automatically make an application stronger. Your bank activity should be understandable in the context of your income, employment, business, savings or sponsor evidence.

What financial evidence should show

  • Your available funds are reasonable for the length and cost of the trip.
  • The source of significant funds can be understood from your financial and professional circumstances.
  • Your accommodation, transport and daily-expense plan is consistent with the money available.
  • If another person is paying, the sponsorship arrangement is supported by appropriate evidence.
Travel Medical Insurance

Schengen travel insurance must meet specific requirements

A basic travel policy is not enough unless it satisfies the Schengen Visa Code requirements for the territory, period and medical risks covered.

€30,000 Minimum

The minimum travel medical insurance coverage under the Visa Code is €30,000.

Schengen Territory

The policy should be valid throughout the relevant Member State territory for the intended visit.

Medical Emergencies

Coverage should include the qualifying emergency medical and hospital risks required by the Visa Code.

Repatriation Cover

The insurance must also satisfy the applicable repatriation coverage requirement.

Application Strength

Your purpose, finances and return circumstances should tell one clear story

Schengen visa assessment is not based on one document alone. The application should make sense as a whole.

Credible Itinerary

Destinations, dates, accommodation and transport should form a realistic trip rather than a collection of unrelated bookings.

Credible Finances

Your available funds, source of income and trip budget should be consistent with one another.

Professional Circumstances

Employment, business, studies or other regular commitments can help explain your circumstances in Pakistan.

Family Circumstances

Relevant family responsibilities and relationships can form part of the overall personal circumstances considered in an application.

Accommodation Evidence

Hotels or host arrangements should support the destinations and dates shown in the itinerary.

Intention to Leave

The application should support the conclusion that the visit is temporary and that you intend to depart within the authorised stay.

Application Process

How to apply for a Schengen Visit Visa from Pakistan

The appointment system and local checklist depend on the country handling your application, but the overall process normally follows these stages.

Choose the Correct Schengen Country

Identify the country responsible for your application based on your main destination, purpose and length of stay.

Plan Your Travel Dates

Build a realistic itinerary with consistent travel, accommodation and intended-stay dates.

Prepare Your Documents

Organise passport, finances, employment or business evidence, accommodation, insurance and purpose-of-travel documents.

Book the Required Appointment

Follow the instructions of the responsible embassy, consulate or authorised application centre in Pakistan.

Submit and Provide Biometrics

Attend your appointment, submit the application and provide fingerprints when required under the Schengen biometric rules.

Receive the Decision

After a decision, check the visa sticker carefully before travel, including validity, entries and permitted duration of stay.

Fingerprints & VIS

Do you need biometrics for a Schengen visa?

Schengen visa applications use the Visa Information System (VIS). Applicants generally provide a photograph and fingerprints, subject to the applicable exemptions.

Fingerprints previously stored in VIS can normally be reused for later visa applications for a period of about 5 years, although a consulate can require new fingerprints in certain circumstances.

Children under 12 are generally exempt from providing finger scans, although a photograph still forms part of the visa process.

Previous biometrics do not always remove the appointment requirement

The country handling your application determines how the file must be lodged. Even where fingerprints can be copied from VIS, you should follow the current local submission instructions rather than assuming that a personal appearance is never required.

Fee & Processing

Schengen visa fee and processing time

Standard Adult Fee

€90

This is the standard short-stay visa fee. A separate service fee may apply where an authorised external application centre is used.

Children Aged 6–12

€45

Specific categories can qualify for fee waivers or different treatment. Check the official rules applying to the applicant.

Decision Period

15 days

This is the normal processing period after lodging. Detailed examination or additional-document requests can extend it up to 45 days.

When should you apply?

A Schengen application should generally be lodged no earlier than 6 months before the intended journey and at least 15 days before travel. Appointment demand can be high, so do not leave the application until the final days before a trip.

Before Submission

Common issues that can weaken a Schengen visit visa application

A visa refusal is based on the facts and rules applicable to the individual file. These are practical areas worth reviewing before submission.

Wrong Consulate

The application is submitted to a country that is not genuinely responsible for the trip.

Unclear Financial History

Large unexplained deposits, insufficient funds or finances that do not match the cost of the proposed visit.

Inconsistent Itinerary

Flights, accommodation, dates and destination information do not tell the same travel story.

Missing Evidence

The local checklist requires evidence that has not been provided or adequately explained.

Weak Professional Context

Employment, business, study or sponsorship evidence is incomplete or does not fit the application narrative.

Unclear Return Circumstances

The file does not sufficiently support the temporary nature of the proposed visit.
